Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about the ASQ CQT certification and our training program.
The ASQ Certified Quality Technician (CQT) is a professional certification for quality practitioners who support quality engineers and quality managers. It validates competence in quality tools, techniques, and problem-solving methods. The certification is globally recognized and demonstrates proficiency in quality assurance and control practices.
The CQT certification is ideal for quality professionals in roles such as quality technicians, inspectors, test specialists, quality analysts, production supervisors, and other professionals who need to understand and apply quality principles. It's particularly valuable for those early in their quality career or those looking to formalize their knowledge and credentials.
To qualify for the CQT exam, you need either: 8 years of on-the-job experience in quality; 5 years of experience plus an associate degree; or 3 years of experience plus a bachelor's degree. The experience must be in one or more areas of the CQT Body of Knowledge.
The CQT exam covers six main domains: Quality Concepts and Tools (25%), Statistical Techniques (25%), Metrology and Calibration (15%), Inspection and Testing (15%), Quality Audits (10%), and Problem-Solving Techniques (10%). This includes basic quality principles, statistical tools, measurement systems, inspection procedures, audit support, and structured problem-solving approaches.
The CQT exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions (100 scored plus 10 unscored pilot questions). You have 4 hours to complete the exam. It's computer-based and offered at testing centers or through online proctoring. The exam is open-book, allowing certain reference materials.
ASQ doesn't publish a fixed passing score. The exam uses a scaled scoring method where scores range from 0 to 100, with a passing score typically around 75. The actual passing score may vary slightly for each exam administration based on difficulty.
The CQT certification is valid for three years from the date you pass the exam. To maintain your certification, you must recertify before the end of your three-year cycle, either by taking the exam again or by submitting Recertification Units (RUs) that demonstrate ongoing professional development.
The CQT exam is open-book. You may bring reference materials such as the Quality Technician Handbook, dictionaries, and other reference texts. However, materials must be bound (spiral, metal-wire, or plastic comb) and cannot contain sample exams or questions. Electronic devices like tablets and laptops are not permitted.
Effective preparation includes: taking a structured training course like ours; studying the ASQ Body of Knowledge; reviewing quality textbooks and reference materials; practicing with sample questions; joining study groups; and applying quality techniques in your daily work. Our training program covers all these aspects with a proven methodology for exam success.
Our CQT training program is available in two formats: a 12-week part-time course with weekly sessions, or a 4-week intensive full-time bootcamp. Both are instructor-led with virtual classroom sessions, practical exercises, and comprehensive study materials. The program includes practice exams, personalized feedback, and ongoing support through the certification process.
The ASQ CQT exam fee varies: ASQ members pay $378, while non-members pay $498 (prices subject to change). This is separate from our training program fees. Our training investment ensures you're well-prepared to pass the exam on your first attempt, maximizing your return on investment.
CQT certification typically leads to better job opportunities, salary increases, professional credibility, and career advancement. Certified Quality Technicians are in demand across industries including manufacturing, healthcare, service sectors, and government organizations. Many organizations prefer or require ASQ certification for quality-related positions.
